Project Brief:
Redesign bicycle component with advanced composites
.•Focus redesign towards a specific type of bike
•Improve performance of type of bike
•Satisfy specific client’s needs and requirements
•Advanced materials must be used and justified within redesign
•Use suitable manufacturing process for chosen advanced material
Design Solution:
The design solution generated from this project was focused around the frame of a high performance jump bike. The frame for a high performance jump bike is the most important component of the design. Without a strong, rigid frame the bike would simply crumble on landing a jump, therefore causing serious harm to riders.
The design solution generated shows a frame moulded from carbon fibre giving it it's unique aesthetics along with providing the high performance strength characteristics needed from the frame. The concept incorporates a built in small seat along with a unique 1 rear fork design with moulded in rear axel This allows for the wheel to be taken on and off with ease when maintaining/servicing the bike. The whole frame is designed around a series of triangles giving the structure rigidity whilst gaining a different aesthetic appearance to that of standard frames. The high cost of carbon fibre can be justified as high performance bikes cost in excess of ~£5000 (shown from market research).
